It feels like every week I talk to someone who is thinking about leaving California for Arizona.
And honestly… I get it.
For a lot of people, Arizona offers something California has become harder and harder to find — a little more space, a little less financial pressure, and a lifestyle that still gives you access to amazing restaurants, entertainment, outdoor adventures, and growing job opportunities.
As a local Arizona Realtor here in the East Valley, I’ve helped quite a few families make the move, and there are a few things I always tell people before they pack the moving truck.
So if Arizona is on your radar, here are some things you should know first.
1. Your Money Usually Goes Further Here
Let’s start with the obvious one.
One of the biggest reasons people leave California is housing affordability.
While Arizona home prices have risen over the last few years, many buyers are still shocked by what their budget can buy compared to places like Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, or the Bay Area.
Instead of stretching for a condo or townhouse, many buyers here can still find:
A lot of people move here and immediately feel like they can breathe financially again.
2. Arizona Is Growing Fast — And That’s A Good Thing
Arizona isn’t just growing because people are moving here.
Big companies continue investing heavily in the state, creating jobs and bringing long-term economic growth.
Companies like:

Intel Corporation expanding in Chandler

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company building massive facilities in Phoenix

Amazon continuing warehouse expansion

Growth in healthcare, technology, aerospace, and manufacturing
This is helping Arizona continue to become one of the fastest-growing states in the country.
3. The Summers Are Hot… Really Hot
Okay, let’s address the obvious.
Yes.
It gets hot.
Very hot.
Summer temperatures regularly hit 110°+.
But here is what most people discover quickly…
Arizona is built for the heat.
Homes, cars, shopping centers, restaurants, and daily life are designed around air conditioning.
And honestly, I’ll take dry heat over humidity any day.
(If you’ve ever walked outside in Florida in July… you know what I mean.)
4. Not Every Arizona City Feels The Same
This is something a lot of out-of-state buyers don’t realize.
Phoenix is huge.
And each area has a completely different feel.
A few examples:
Gilbert
Great for families, beautiful master planned communities, amazing parks, and one of my favorite downtown areas anywhere in Arizona.
Chandler
Great restaurants, growing tech industry, awesome nightlife, and I personally love Downtown Chandler for a night out. The live music scene there is one of my favorites.
Queen Creek
More space, newer communities, growing quickly, great if you want newer homes and a little more room.
Scottsdale
Higher-end communities, golf, resorts, nightlife, luxury lifestyle.
The biggest mistake buyers make is assuming Arizona is all the same.
It definitely isn’t.
5. You May Need To Rethink Your Home Search
A lot of California buyers come here with expectations based on what they know.
Things work differently here.
Some common surprises:

HOA communities are everywhere

New build communities can offer huge incentives

Water softeners are extremely common because of hard water

Energy efficiency matters more than many buyers realize
There are definitely Arizona-specific things to consider during the buying process.
6. Arizona Lifestyle Is Hard To Beat
This is honestly what keeps a lot of people here once they move.
You can:

Hike year-round

Drive to Sedona for the weekend

Escape to Flagstaff when you want cooler weather

Be in Las Vegas in a few hours

Head to Mexico for beach weekends
And during fall through spring?
The weather is pretty incredible.
Final Thoughts
Moving states can feel overwhelming.
And if you’re coming from California, there are a lot of things that work differently here that most people don’t realize until they’re already in the process.
